Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the pharynx located at the back of the throat. The most commonly referred to as "sore throat". Pharyngitis can also cause itching and swallowing difficulties in the throat.

Viruses are the most common cause of sore throat. Pharyngitis is most commonly caused by viral infections such as colds, influenza or mononucleosis. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics and treatment is only necessary to alleviate symptoms.

Less commonly, pharyngitis is caused by a bacterial infection. Bacterial infections require antibiotics. The most common bacterial infection of the throat is strep throat caused by group A streptococcus. Rare causes of bacterial pharyngitis include gonorrhea, chlamydia and corynebacterium.
Frequent exposure to colds and fluids may increase your risk of pharyngitis. This applies in particular to people with health services, allergies and frequent sinus infections. Exposure to cigarette smoke may also increase your risk.

If acute pharyngitis is caused by bacteria, the use of antibiotics and antihistamine may be recommended if allergy is caused. In addition to these drugs, complaints will be reduced; painkillers, antipyretics, cough breakers, nasal opening sprays may be used.
